Who Is This King?
Building from a reflective and almost sombre start, the powerful chorus punches through the atmosphere with a message of hope to all mankind. It’s a Christmas song, but not like you’ve heard before.
Who Is This King? is inspired by the more melancholic sounding Christmas songs like O Come, O Come Emmanuel, which have that atmospheric, almost mysterious sound in the music.
“We celebrate how Christmas is ‘merry’, exciting and fun (and it is all of those things), but obviously, the point of Jesus coming as a baby was that one day he would die. I was driven to think about that in depth, and it was like that shadow was always looming over the manger. God knew right from the beginning of time that He’d have to send Jesus to come and die for us, and of course ultimately that gives us life – and that is the most freeing and incredible act of love we’ve ever known – but there is something very foreshadowing about the birth of Jesus. Who Is This King? starts from the birth of this miraculous baby, and then tells the story of his life and his death and his resurrection; it’s about why he came.”
– April Shipton, introducing Who Is This King? for its first airplay on UCB2 with Ruth O’Reilly-Smith
The theme throughout is that Jesus was born to die; “to make a way to seek and save every broken soul.” If you love a Christian song with a bit of atmosphere and a poignant meaning, this song is for you.
